Plot 3D

Exercise 15.3.58 (Page 1035):

This figure shows portions of the paraboloid    and the right circular cylinder .  The figure will be drawn in four stages.  First of all, the screen viewing cube is set up as   , and the viewer angle with the x-axis is 40 degrees.

Stage 1: The cylinder is parameterized as

The "back side" of this surface is plotted for (s-resolution is 16) and for    (t-resolution is 12) and is shown to the right..

Stage 2: The paraboloid is parameterized as

and is plotted for   (s-resolution is 16) and  (t-resolution is 32).  This portion of the cylinder is plotted without erasing the portion of the elliptic paraboloid already plotted and is shown to the right.

The final two stages graph the part of the cylinder in front of the paraboloid. Each of these final stages uses the same parameterization as stage 1, but the s- and t-plot intervals and resolutions are different.

Stage 3:  In this stage the cylinder is plotted and for   (s-resolution is 16) and for  (t-resolution 3). This portion of the cylinder is plotted without erasing the previous graph and is shown to the right.

Stage 4:  In this stage the cylinder is plotted and for  (s-resolution is 16) and for  (t-resolution 9). This portion of the cylinder is plotted without erasing the previous graph and is shown to the right.
