The W. Varick Nevins III High School Mathematics Competition

The following is a short article about Varick and Lil Nevins, written in the mid 1980's by Robert Sloan, who retired in 1986 from the Mathematics Faculty at Alfred University.

Varick and Lil Nevins spent their entire adult lives as member of the  Alfred community and their contributions to it  and the larger community of which it is part will remain with us for as long as we honor intelligence and dedication.

Varick graduated from Alfred in 1932 and received a Master's degree in mathematics in 1937 at which time he joined the Mathematics faculty where he remained until his death in 1967.  His love for mathematics and for teaching gained him a place in the hearts of students at Alfred and everyone who had a course with him remembers not only his knowledge of mathematics, but also his delightful sense of the ridiculous (Varick's classes were never dull).  Varick and Lil were married not long after Lil's graduation from Alfred in 1937 (Lil continued working at the University until her death in 1985).

In Varick's (and now Lillian's) memory, the Nevins Fund to "recognize accomplishment in Mathematics" has supported not only the High School Mathematics Contest, but also the annual W. Varick Nevins Prize to the undergraduate student who has the best record in Mathematics at the University.

The contest and the Prize are our way of remembering these two remarkable people - may these remembrances long endure.
