- What is Hillel?
- Hillel is a national network of Jewish student organizations. Founded in 1949, Hillel at Alfred provides a focus for Jewish life for students at Alfred University and Alfred State College and a link between local students and Jewish students nationally. Hillel is a religious, social and cultural organization all rolled into one.
- Religious Life:
- Students of all religious backgrounds are welcome to join and participate in Hillel events. Student-run services (either Reform or Conservative depending on who is leading) are held every Friday evening at the Hillel House. Hillel has a Seder on the first night of Passover that is always attended by students, faculty, and area residents. There are services on campus for the High Holy Days and students carpool to Hornell's Temple Beth-El for Kol Nidre.
- Socializing:
- Having fun, getting to know each other, and making lasting friendships is a big part of Hillel. Our monthly bagel brunches (complete with cream cheese and lox, of course!) are a great way to relax and get to know each other. We throw Hanukkah parties and Purim parties that are always a lot of fun. And, attending Hillel events at other colleges and universities allows us to make new friends and broaden our experiences.
- Learning and growing:
- Learning is a major focus of Hillel and we offer students the opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics, from issues of personal identity to interfaith marriages to ethical issues. Our members have participated in and led text discussion classes, Hebrew classes and an "Introduction to Judaism" group. We also bring nationally recognized speakers to campus. Recent guests have addressed such topics as the Holocaust and Jewish mysticism.
- The Hillel House:
- Since the fall of 1994, the physical, spiritual and social core of Jewish life at Alfred has been the Hillel House. It's also known as the nicest house on campus! Located at 18 Main Street in the Village of Alfred and maintained by the University, the Hillel House is a beautiful Victorian house that keeps a kosher kitchen and accommodates eight student residents. There's also a computer room and a meeting space that is used for religious services, meetings and discussion groups. Our house is an active and lively place, where students come together to reflect, learn and celebrate. Students can apply to live in the Hillel House (see photo). Priority goes to upperclassmen, those that keep kosher and active Hillel members.
- Unanswered Questions?
- This year the president of Hillel is Jared Branfman . If you want to get in touch directly with the student members of Hillel, you can call us at (607) 871-3355 or contact us via the contact form. Some of your questions and our answers will be added to this page, so feel free to ask, so we can make our presence on the Internet even better.
